We ordered an extra-large plain cheese pizza from Fida's Pizza on a Sunday evening. Fida's, which according to their menu has been in business for 'A Quarter Century of Quality', has long been a staple for Carleton University students. Up until recently there was a competing pizza place, Sunnyside Pizza, right across the street. Their pizza was horrible, so we hoped that the better of the two survived the rivalry.
We were pleasantly surprised when the pizza arrived a mere 22 minutes after we had ordered it. The box was a little flimsy, but they stapled it shut to avoid any unfortunate accidents. When the staples were taken out and the box was opened, we were happy to find a dough ball in the centre of the pizza as opposed to the usual plastic contraption used to keep the cheese off the top of the box. We at Pizza Ottawa have a nostalgic attachment to dough balls, so bonus points are awarded whenever we get a pizza with one. There were only 8 pieces, which seems a little low for an extra-large, but we had no problem with the size of the slices.
Once we dug in, we were extremely pleased. The cheese was browned and a little crunchy on the top, which added to the flavour. The crust was fairly thin (perfect, really) and delicious. It was crunchy and soft in the middle. One reviewer noted that it tasted similar to a homemade soft pretzel (minus the salt). The only minor downside to this pizza was the sauce. The sauce was not very special on its own. It didn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the pizza, but it was lacking any real zest. Grease-wise, it was very good. The grease added to the flavour of the pizza, but it wasn't sloppy or messy.
The verdict was that Fida's pizza was very good and well made/cooked. We will be investigating further to see how it goes with toppings.
